At Wahid Hasyim street, several doors away from Fave hotel, there is an eatery called RM. Padang Dibao Untuang which serves Pagaruyung style Minang (West Sumatra) dishes. A friend brought us there once, and I’m hooked ever since. This isn’t a clean, spacious and fully air-conditioned restaurant. The place is actually quite small and very hot on lunch time. But the food they serve makes it worth a visit every time I’m craving for spicy Minang food.
Dibao Untuang’s specialties are gulai tunjang padeh (beef tendon cooked in spicy coconut milk) and gulai gajeboh (made using the fatty part of the beef). Everything is served by order, unlike most other Minang restaurants where various dishes are served buffet style on your table. They didn’t tone down the taste or make the dishes milder to suit Jakartan’s taste palate. It’s truly an antithesis of high-end Minang restaurants like Garuda or Sari Ratu. So, if you happen to be in the area, try it! You won’t be disappointed.
