From Warung Ethnic, we decided to go to Dago area to Lawang Wangi Art Space (review coming next). But on our way there, we got sidetracked and stopped by a place serving durian dishes. The place is called Es Durian Pak Aip and the exterior is quite impressive don’t you think? It got a mountain of durian at each side of the restaurant, plus there’s a guy sitting there opening the durian one by one.
There are various ice dishes with durian as the main star, plus several selection of noodles. But our focus was firmly on the durian, so we ordered browny soup (durian served with ice cubes and palm sugar and coconut milk) 19K and red bean (durian served with ice cubes and a dollop of red bean ice cream and mocca syrup) 22K. I enjoyed the red bean ice cream very much which I think goes well with the durian, but my friends love durian with palm sugar and they decided to order another portion of it. In my opinion, the second portion of browny durian was surprisingly much better than the first. I love the slightly bitter durian taste instead of the one that only tasted sweet.
We also got a chance to chat with the owner, Pak Aip himself. He told us that he has been in business since 1977 and has a lot of branches in Bandung. The durian he used comes from Bengkulu, Lampung and Medan, and there’s also a selection of Thai’s Monthong. I think it’s a good thing they try to use local durian as I always think local durian flavors are much more complex and far superior than the imported ones. Do you agree?
