November 30, 2015 | Bali, Balinese Cuisine, INDONESIAN CUISINE

From the numerous eateries I’ve tried on my last trip to Bali, one of the more memorable places was Hujan Locale. Located just a stone’s throw away from Seniman Coffee Studio, Hujan Locale is a relatively new establishment by Chef Will Meyrick who is also the man behind Sarong & Mamasan in Seminyak, and E&O in Jakarta. The restaurant has a casual ambience, light and airy with vintage looking windows along one side of the restaurant. There are two floors of dining area and fortunately, the first floor is a non-smoking area during lunch time (I forgot to ask about the smoking policy during dinner hours).

Just like other Meyrick’s establishments, the menu in Hujan Locale revolves around Asian cuisine. We decided to have a late lunch here after spending a beautiful morning around Ubud. The place was not crowded as it was well past lunch hour, so we easily got a table near the window facing Sri Wedari street. We saw from the menu that they serve artisan long pizza, we decided to order black smoked ham mozzarella basil pizza with chili flakes 110K. We didn’t have to wait long before the pizza arrived. I always love thin-crust pizza, especially if it’s loaded with bacon/ham, so the pizza was gone in record time.

After that we decided to go for something Balinese. We ordered something called Babi Genyol 160K to share with rice 15K. Babi Genyol in Hujan Locale is Will Meyrick’s appreciation of traditional Balinese dish. It was served in a large wooden tray consisting of a bowl of thick slices of pork belly stew in Balinese spices, urutan which is a type of Balinese sausage, variations of leaves and 2 jars of chili sauces (green chili sauce and sambal matah) and rambak babi (pork skin cracker). It was superb. The pork belly was tender and the broth was aromatic with a mild taste. Plus I enjoyed the generous serving of leaves and chili sauces.

Overall we enjoyed what we tried at Hujan Locale, the food was good and the service was impeccable. There are still a lot we haven’t try at Hujan Locale but we feel really full after that, so I’ll be returning whenever we’re in Ubud again.
