Braised tofu with spinach and mushrooms

I first saw this dish at Cilantro restaurant years ago. They named it tahu nenek moyang. It was delicious and quite pricey. Since then I began looking for this kind of dish whenever we went to Chinese restaurants. There are many variations for the name, some restaurants even called this dish ‘XXX restaurant tofu special’. One day, when I dined with SC parents, I asked her mother about the recipe and I promised myself that I’m going to make it some day.
This is supposed to be my weekend project, but I was too lazy to cook last (long) weekend. As I was afraid that the ingredients might gone bad, I tried to make it this morning before going for work. Turned out, it required about 45 minutes to cook. As I ‘m running very late for work, I left all the dirty dishes to SC. I hope he finds the taste well worth the effort :)

Serves : 2
Preparation time: 10 mins
Cooking time: 45 mins


  • 1 block silken tofu
  • 1 cup chopped spinach blanch
  • a pack of shimeji mushroom
  • 1 egg white


  • 1 clove garlic
  • 2 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1/4 cup water


  • Mix the chopped spinach with the egg white, put on top of the tofu block and steam for 5-10 minutes until the spinach is “attached” to the tofu
  • Fry the steamed tofu and spinach in hot oil until golden brown, drain well, cut into serving size and set aside
  • Pour oil in the sauce pan, add garlic, stir until aromatic, add mushroom, keep stirring for 1 minute
  • Pour oyster sauce and sesame oil into the mushroom mixture and bring to boil. Add a little corn flour to thicken the sauce.
  • Pour the sauce over the spinach tofu, serve warm

    Oh gitu toh caranya bikin daun2 diatas tahu itu yah. Gue selama ini kira dari seaweed. Menarik juga yah… Thanks! Gue juga rada2 pengen sih makan makanan ini :D

    Katanya enak tapi buang2 waktu. Cobain Ven.. tadinya gw mo bikin versi sandwich gitu.. jadi bayamnya dijepit. cuman separo potongan tahunya pecah waktu diangkat. :P
