Not many people know that not far from Emporium Pluit Mall, tucked inside Karina Sayang 2 residential complex, is an eatery that serves a mean Singapore style prawn noodle soup called Lotus Mie Udang Singapore. It’s not a fancy restaurant, just an ordinary house turned into an eating space. But it was clean, complete with air conditioner to beat Jakarta’s humid weather, plus it has a nonsmoking policy. Yay!
The menu consists of varieties of rice, noodle, lontong (rice cake), beehoon/rice vermicelli, kway teow (flat rice noodle/河粉). But everytime we went to this place, we always order their specialties, which are Mie Udang Singapore (Singaporean’s prawn noodle) and Mie Goreng Terasi (Medanese’s stir fried noodle with fermented shrimp paste). The Mie Udang Singapore is noodle served in prawn broth soup topped with prawns, prawn balls, braised meat and beansprout. It was savory, but not too rich and the broth tasted like real prawn broth made from boiled prawn heads, not from instant broth cubes. Those who can eat pork may add the provided cu yu ca (pork rind) to add a more savory kick. The Mie Goreng Terasi was a bit spicy, with a tasty belacan (fermented shrimp paste), kangkung (morning glory), tomato, some fishcake and prawn balls.
All in all, Lotus Mie Udang Singapore is like a hidden gem in North Jakarta/Pluit. So if you happen to be in the area and don’t know what to eat for breakfast/lunch, do give this place a try.
