In the past few months, we’ve found ourself going to Lotte Avenue a lot. It’s a relatively new mall in South Jakarta packed with eateries that are not yet present in other malls. One of the restaurants that grabbed our attention is MAD, short for Modern Asian Diner. MAD is a restaurant under Tung Lok F&B Group Singapore that also manages Taipan at WTC Mangga Dua and Ming at Epicentrum Walk. The logo looked familiar, then I remembered that it was on Dick Lee’s Mad Chinaman Album (I collected Dick Lee’s albums back in the ’90s). I was quite excited about this so I urged SC to try this place.
The MAD interior is a reflection of Dick Lee’s fun and unique songs. It’s spacious, very colorful and playful. There are separate smoking and non smoking dining areas, which is a good news for non smokers like me & SC. Just like the name implied, they serve modern Asian cuisine including dimsum. Unfortunately that afternoon, some of the steamed dumplings are already sold out, so we ordered baked barbeque pork buns (3pcs) 22,8K and crispy yam dumpling with minced chicken filling (3pcs) 22.8K with a pot of Jasmine tea.
The dimsums were quite delicious. The pork buns are filled with chasiu and the crispy yam dumpling is above average when compared with the competition. After that, I got my eyes on their claypot dishes, so we ordered black bean japanese momoiro pork belly katsu claypot rice 108K. When it arrived, the dish looked very appetizing, still piping hot, with runny eggs and generous slices of pork katsu on top. I mixed it all first before I ate it, but I was disappointed that the rice tasted very bland, even the katsu tasted plain. I have to ask for some chopped chili and soy sauce to spice it up.
Nonetheless, eating at MAD is a nice experience. The claypot rice is obviously a miss, but we’ll return for the steamed dumplings. Hopefully the food quality will have improved more by the time we go there again. Oh and please MAD, update the playlist! The only song that played during our visit was Bebel Gilberto’s Summer Samba. It’s a nice song, but hearing it over and over again for over an hour felt like a mild form of torture. Why not play Dick Lee’s songs?
