There are a lot of soto (Indonesia traditional soup dish) variants that can be found in Jakarta. I think every region in Indonesia has its own take on soto, with some using coconut milk, while others opt for the clear soup. Soto Kudus is a soto dish originating from Kudus District in Central Java. It is a simple dish with clear soup broth usually served in a small bowl, and ingredients consisting of chicken slices, bean sprout, celery and topped with fried garlic.


One of the places in Jakarta that serves quite good Soto Kudus is in the Graha Kencana building complex, right next to Siloam Hospital in Kebon Jeruk area. I figured the place would be quite crowded on weekdays so we always went here during weekends. Besides soto kudus, they also serve other Javanese dishes like pindang and pecel.


The soto can be served with either rice or lontong (rice cakes). A portion of nasi soto kudus here costs about 20K. Not the cheapest one as it’s only a small bowl of rice with with chicken slices, beansprout drenched in clear broth soup, but the taste was worth the price. Plus, you can always order a bigger bowl of soto kudus 27K without rice.


I love the flavorful broth with a dash of lime. It was refreshing and combined with rice, makes one warm and comforting dish. The soto kudus here is also served with a range of dishes like various type of satays (sate ati ampela, sate kerang, sate telur puyuh), telur pindang, bakwan jagung, tahu isi, perkedel and various types of crackers/kerupuk. Take note, however, that if you go crazy with all the accompanying dishes, be prepared to pay quite a lot for the total cost.
