Soto Pak Sholeh Yogyakarta

On our last day in Yogya, we still have a lot of places to try before our flight back to Jakarta. One thing that I noticed was that besides Gudeg, Yogya is also famous for its soto. One of the recommended places for soto in Yogya is Soto Pak Sholeh, so we started from there. It’s still around breakfast time and I’m surprised that the place was crowded. It seems that people in Yogya like to eat soto at any time, from breakfast to dinner (just like gudeg). We wanted to maintain some space for other food, so we only ordered 2 bowls of soto with rice to share. Pak Sholeh’s soto is a clear meat soup type without the use of turmeric or coconut milk. The one I ordered was with half portion of rice, topped with beef cubes, beansprout, and cabbage. If that’s not enough, you can add additional beef innards (babat, paru, usus), potato croquette or fried tempeh. After that, you can adjust the taste to your preference by adding a dash of lime, chili sauce or kecap manis. I found it to be decent, but not really to my liking.

After the meal, when we’re paying the bill, I spotted the kitchen behind the dining area and asked to see it. Apparently, they’re still using traditional stoves to cook the dishes which they believed to result in a more flavorful dish than using modern equipments.
