[CLOSED] SUN FONG Bak Kut Teh Jakarta

Lately, Bak Kut Teh (肉骨茶) restaurants seem to have become a trend, especially in the North Jakarta region. It started with Song Fa Bak Kut Teh (read the review HERE), then quickly followed by several others. The latest addition is Sun Fong Bak Kut Teh, also at Pantai Indah Kapuk. The restaurant was established in 1971 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and is a popular tourist destination. Sun Fong Bak Kut Teh is not their first branch in Jakarta as they have been in business for a while in Kelapa Gading as Sun Fong Cuisine serving bak kut teh along with other Chinese dishes.

Just like the name indicates, Sun Fong Bak Kut Teh in Pantai Indah Kapuk serves only bak kut teh and its accompanying dishes. There are two types of bak kut teh available here: Malaysian (Cantonese) bak kut teh and Singaporean (Teochew) bak kut teh. The difference is that the Cantonese version have darker color owing to the various Chinese herbal medicine in the broth, while the Teochew version used more garlic and pepper in the broth, hence the lighter colored soup.

I personally prefer the Malaysian / Cantonese style bak kut teh, so I ordered string-tied bak kut teh (绑线肉骨茶) 88,8K with some cakwe (Chinese cruller) 10K, fried onion rice 10K and Chinese jasmine tea 35K. The string-tied bak kut teh appreared very appetizing, with a big bone and meat that readily falls off the bone. It was delicious and tender. The broth was so aromatic and, of course, refillable. So far, this is the strongest-tasting herbal bak kut teh broth I’ve ever tasted in Jakarta. The herbal ingredients lent a slightly bitter taste to the broth that actually enhanced the flavor. Out of curiosity, I asked for some Teochew bak kut teh broth and it also tasted good. The fried-onion rice was delicious despite the small portion. Sadly, I’m still on the lookout for the yam rice (芋头饭) I’ve once eaten in Penang, but never found in Jakarta.

All in all, I am a happy customer. Although the restaurant gets really noisy during the lunch hour (and most probably at dinner time too), I’m already planning to return for more.
