I’ve heard about this particular restaurant called Suntiang for quite some time, but since it’s located at Pondok Indah Mall, I didn’t have the chance to visit it until 2 months ago. Suntiang is part of the restaurant row at Pondok Indah Mall 2. It looks like a typical Japanese sushi restaurant with sushi conveyor belt. However, instead of serving Japanese food, Suntiang offers West Sumatran / Minang dishes in Japanese style. Since I love spicy Minang food, I had a high expectation of this place.
The place was quite crowded when we arrived since it was a public holiday. The sushi bar was full, so we got a table near the entrance. We ordered dragon balado roll, sambal chicken teriyaki roll, nigiri teri balado, rendang roll and salmon gulai roll. Overall, the dishes were tasty and the presentation was good, but I can’t help comparing them with traditional West Sumatran restaurants where you can eat much much more, instead of tiny sushi rolls like in Suntiang. Plus I think they’ve toned down the spicyness.
Since we’re not full after several plates of sushi, we ordered the ramen cabe hijau which tasted delicious and satisfying. All in all, it was worth a try and I must say that I like the idea of fusion Minang sushi. Since they are now open in Grand Indonesia Shopping Town as well, whenever I felt like having a bowl of West Sumatran style ramen, I can go there.
