Two months ago, a foodie friend commented in my Instagram account that I should try a place called Kembang Bawang in Tangerang area. He claimed that the place serves the best nasi goreng cakalang asap & kecombrang. As an avid fan of fried rice & kecombrang, I’m immediately interested.

Kembang Bawang is located in Modern Land residential complex in Tangerang. As we’re not familiar with the area, we used Google Maps to get there and it was not hard to find. Turned out the complex is located just across Tang City Mall. From the entrance, we just continued down to the row of shophouses in the Modern Walk area. Kembang Bawang occupies a single shophouse there.

Asides from the many nasi goreng/ fried rice variations, Kembang Bawang also serves traditional Benteng dishes. So there are selections like soto betawi, mie kangkung, ketupat sayur, gado-gado siram. It was just like Betawi dishes, but with local Benteng chinese twist.

On our first visit, we tried the nasi goreng pete & gado-gado siram. I have to admit, their nasi goreng pete is the best pete fried rice I’ve ever had so far. It was so fragrant and the pete were fresh. This definitely a must-try if you love dishes with pete. The gado-gado siram more or less tasted like rujak pengantin, so the sauce is more tangy and lighter than the thick & bold gado-gado peanut sauce.

Because we’re very impressed with the fried rice, we kept returning there to try more fried rice selections like nasi goreng cakalang asap kecombrang which tasted as good as I hoped it would. The chef, who has a formal culinary background, infused the cakalang fish so it was very smoky, plus the kecombrang (torch ginger flower) was also very fragrant. We also tried their mie kangkung and ketupat sayur which were both very good, cooked to perfection, and very well balanced as they tasted just right, not too sweet, not too salty. We later learned that the traditional Benteng dishes were handled by another chef who have years of experience preparing traditional Benteng dishes for catering / events.

So far, we haven’t found a single thing we didn’t like at Kembang Bawang. We will keep returning there from time to time whenever I craved a good pete fried rice.
