A long long time ago (but not far far away), we had a memorable lunch at a Japanese restaurant called Tsukinofune at Hotel Ambhara. Sadly, only months later it had closed for good. We’ve never found a proper replacement, so when we heard that they have opened again under the name Wabaru Tsukinofune, we decided to go there for lunch to see whether it is still as good as we remembered.

The new Wabaru Tsukinofune is now housed inside Veranda Hotel at Pakubuwono. We went there near the year-end holiday, so the traffic was relatively light. We arrived around 1:30PM and just noticed that lunch service ends at 2:30PM. Luckily the friendly staff still welcomed and ushered us to our table.

Wabaru Tsukinofune serves a variety of lunch set menu to choose from. We decided to order Wabaru Gozen 240K to share. They informed us that the ocha is free, so we decided to order a glass of lemon sour, a combination of sochu, lemon & soda water. Our lemon sour arrived soon after in a large beer glass.

The Wabaru Gozen is beautifully presented. 1nside the small compartment boxes, there were various small dishes ranging from sashimi slices, grilled unagi with tamago, aburi (slightly torched) salmon, ebi tempura, nanban chicken, braised beef, braised daikon, seaweed, to pickles. We also got salad, miso soup, and gohan (rice). I think the set menu represented what Tsukinofune used to offer and it shared some similarities with what we ordered years ago.

The taste was as delightful as the presentation. Soon, we’re “oohing and aahhing” every time we sampled the small dishes. Combined, the small dishes were enough for us both and we felt full afterwards. Afterwards, we’re also served a complimentary coffee pudding. There are still many we want to try from the lunch set menu, plus we also took a peek at the dinner menu and found out that the price was quite affordable. So yeah, future visits to Tsukinofune are definitely happening.
