Ayam Goreng “Mbok Berek” (Mbok Berek’s Fried Chicken) is an old school Indonesian fried chicken seller that has been around for a long time, even before the invasion of imported fried chickens. I have heard about it, but never had the chance to try it until recently. We went to their store located at Jl. Prof. Dr. Soepomo. It occupied a spacious Javanese joglo style house with pendopo roof. The interior was elegant with Javanese ambience.
The specialty of the place is Indonesian fried chicken that we’ve known as ayam goreng kremes which means fried chicken with lots of crunchy flour/batter. The free range chicken were braised first with lots of herbs & spices, dipped in the batter and then deep fried, the rest of the batter was also fried until golden.
So we ordered a portion of nasi rames istimewa 45.5K which consists of a piece of ayam kremes, sayur krecek (spicy dish made from beef skin crackers) and sambal terasi (chili sauce with fermented prawn paste). We also ordered a portion of nasi gudeg (traditional rice dishes popular in Yogyakarta that is made with young jackfruit) 38.5K. Overall, I like the chicken. It was a tad salty, the meat was tender and flavorful and the crunchy parts were also tasty. The accompanying sambal terasi was also good although I found it to be not spicy at all and a little bit sweet. We’re quite satisfied with Ayam Goreng “Mbok Berek” and I think next I’ll try another old school fried chicken by Ny. Suharti. Stay tuned.
