I’ve always been a fan of Indonesian spicy food, and Bebek Kaleyo is one of them. However, the location of this eatery is quite far at Sunter area and I rarely go there. So I was excited when I heard that they have opened a branch near where I live. I urged SC to go there for dinner a few weeks back on a Sunday evening. It’s located next to Daan Mogot’s KFC joint, just across the street from Hermina Hospital. Unfortunately, the place was closed on Sunday. So we went back there again 2 times for dinner on weekdays, and failed to get a seat as the place was very crowded.
So long story short, on our fourth attempt, we came at 10:30 in the morning and luckily they were already opened and the place was still quite empty. We got a table in the non-smoking air conditioned room. The interior has a warm ambience with exposed brick wall and lots of colorful birdcages at the ceiling complete with birds chirping sound effect (yeah, tacky). The outside seating and the upper floor are for smoking customers.
So we placed our orders. SC ordered their specialty bebek goreng kremes (fried duck with crunchy batter) 18K, while I set my choice on bebek cetar ala Madura (Madura’s style spicy duck) 23K with rice. As we waited, the place began to fill up quite quickly, so we’re lucky that we’re early.
When our orders arrived, we quickly dug in. The duck’s portion was moderate, not too big, but tender and well-seasoned. My bebek cetar turned out to be very spicy, which is all the better for me. They also provide their original “very spicy” chili sambal on the table.
Overall, it was a delicious lunch, the price is also very affordable for free-range ducks. Although the service can be quite slow when the place is crowded, I’ll surely be back again for more.
