As an Indonesian, I must confess that I can’t live a day without eating rice. I’m always eager to try any type of rice dishes, from nasi uduk, nasi goreng to paella and even risotto. So when I heard about this newly opened eatery called Donburi Ichiya at Lippo Mall Puri Indah, I immediately wanted to try it, since I also love donburi.
So last week, on a fine sunny day, we went to Lippo Mall Puri solely to try Donburi Ichiya. It is located at the lower ground level near Hypermart. The place is not big, decorated in izakaya (Japanese warung) style with lots of Japanese flyers affixed to the wooden wall. To order the food, we have to queue and the food will be prepared in front of us. As I looked into the menu, apparently we can personalize the bowl per our request. We can choose from bowl size, donburi base (Salmon Aburi Don, Karaage Don, Yakitori Don, Gyu Don), sauce (Garlic Butter, Soy honey, Mayo, Spicy Mayo, Wasabi Mayo, Black Pepper) and topping (Melted cheese, Kimchi, Tamago Yaki, Onsen Tamago, Japanese Curry). There are several recommended combinations if you got confused.
Since I was too lazy to choose, I decided to go with the recommendation. I picked wasabi mayo aburi salmon with tamago yaki 50K (regular). After that, there are several selections of agemono (fried dishes) before proceeding to the cashier. I chose kakiage 10K & sweet potato tempura 7K to accompany my donburi.
To be honest, it was a decent meal. The torched salmon was fresh (the server warned me before that it will be half raw, which is fine by me), but the wasabi mayo lacked the kick I’ve come to expect from wasabi. I would much prefer a spicier mayo blend. The fried fritters was just ok. Overall, I think it was worth a try, but both the food and service speed need some improvements. I suspect a long queue will form if they don’t speed up their service.
