Izakaya Kai modern izakaya and boulangerie is the latest addition to the food scene in Pluit, North Jakarta. Located not far from Ombe Kofie and just across the street from Siauw A Tjiap, Izakaya Kai is the brainchild of husband and wife team, chefs Adhika Maxi and Karen Carlotta, in collaboration with Tempura Master Hitoshi Kimura. The eatery has two different sections, each occupying a different floor. The first floor serves all day dining with a menu of Japan-influenced western dishes, while the second floor is the izakaya, which is reservation-only at the moment, with bookings for lunch (11AM-3PM) and dinner (6PM-10PM).

Earlier today, we’re running an errand in Pluit area and I think why not go here as it has generated tons social media buzz. It was already 3 o’clock in the afternoon, so we easily got a table on the 1st floor. The interior is modern and minimal with Japanese touches. At the front side of the eatery, there’s a cakes counter displaying lots of gorgeous cakes, including Karen Carlotta’s signature red velvet chocolate cake. The menu is printed on a piece of paper that covers snacks/appetizer, pasta, donburi dishes, and set menu.

As usual, we ordered some dishes to share, starting from enoki mushroom soup with truffle oil 45K and then grilled pork belly skewers donburi 90K. The mushroom soup arrived topped with enoki tempura and croutons. It tasted great as mushroom soup combined with truffle oil rarely goes wrong. Unfortunately, the enoki tempura was served dipped in the soup and the submerged part became soggy and chewy.

The pork belly skewers donburi also tasted very nice. The meat was tender and the seasoning was spot on. It came on top of rice with caramelized onion, sunny side up egg, and a little bit of salad. Honestly, I don’t think the salad and egg complemented the pork belly skewers and rice all that well.

After that, I went to the dessert counter and ordered a piece of chocolate matcha cake 50K. I have no complaint at all. It was simply delicious and disappeared very quickly. I almost didn’t want to share this with SC. 4 thumbs up for Karen.

So far, I like my experience in Izakaya Kai. The service was attentive and the food were delicious (despite the nitpicks). I still want to try the izakaya dining on the second floor, but I think I’ll have to wait awhile until the hype cools down a bit.
