Despite the size of Grand Indonesia Shopping Town, there are times when we just couldn’t find a place we wanted to go for lunch or dinner. So I was very happy when I read about an affordable canteen in Cindy’s blog that is also a non-smoking place. We visited it and since then it have been our favorite place for lunch when we’re in the mall.
The place is called Kantin Karyawan or Employee Canteen, which is actually a place dedicated to serve office/mall workers in the area. It is located at the West Mall, just go down to the lower ground and head to the parking area, but turn right instead of left just as you pass the metal detector. It is a vast dining space, air-conditioned with long communal tables and food stalls lining up along the right side. There are plenty of options and I haven’t try them all, but so far from our several visits, I love the noodles from Kedai Bakmi Asoy and mixed Manado rice dishes from Baku Dapa. There are several stalls serving red rice that will surely attract health-concious people. The price is also very affordable compared to other restaurants in the area.
What I love more in this canteen is that on every table, there’s a sign advising us to put left over food in its place. There’s a dedicated area at each end of the hall, where we can dump the leftovers in dedicated trash bins for plastic, paper and organic trash. I find it very educating and hopefully other canteens can learn from this place too.
