July 28, 2010 | Central jakarta, JAKARTA, Japanese & Korean Cuisine
I’ve been searching for a perfect katsudon (カツ丼, rice topped with deep fried pork cutlets, eggs and various condiments) ever since I’ve read Banana Yoshimoto’s novel: Kitchen
last year (yes, I was practically drooling when I read that book). Fortunately there are a lot of Japanese restaurants here in Jakarta, but most of the time these restaurants serve chicken katsu/beef katsu. It was quite hard to find a decent katsudon in Jakarta. Then I heard about a place specializing in Katsu located in both Plaza Indonesia and Grand Indonesia, but too bad the price was quite high, so I hesitated until one day I read that they offer discount using a certain credit card.
So we went there with a friend for dinner one night. The place is designed in elegant contemporary design with some Japanese ceramic bowls pasted on the glass wall partition. The ambience is nice but the lighting is too dim. We ordered Pork Sirloin Katsu Nabe Set (complete with katsu, miso or tonjiro soup, pickles and salads) to share, while our friend ordered Saporro Ramen set menu that came with tempura. After ordering, a waiter came to our table and gave a demonstration of making the katsu sauce: sesame seed was smashed in a bowl and then combined with katsu sauce. It was interesting. Then our meal came. The presentation was nice, the portion was quite genereous and the taste was delicious. I enjoyed the meal, but SC felt that it was not worth the price, even after the discount. Still, if you have some extra money to burn, you might want to try this place or its sister next door, Toranomon 🙂
