There’s a place called Komunal 88 that have become our go-to place whenever we’re around Kemang area. It’s a cafe / bakery that opens from 7 in the morning. The place is not too big but pretty comfortable with two large communal tables and several privates tables. Smoking is not allowed inside, yay! There’s a coffee section that serves Caswell’s coffee, a pastry shelf full with freshly baked goods and cakes, a fresh vegetables and drinks section and an open kitchen.

The first time we’re there, I tried their komunal 88 egg (a poached egg on a crown of crispy parma ham and garlic-sauteed mushrooms, served with an assortment of home-made flavored butters) 75K, freshly baked croissant, cappuccino, a plate of parmigiano puff 15K and chocolate mousse 25K. I was so impressed with what I ate that day and decided to return a week later.

They have a long list of tea selection by Betjeman & Barton, and so far we’ve tried white pearl tai mu 25K, mate limone (brazil) 20K, chrysanthemum flowers 25K, genmaicha 20K. They served the tea correctly, complete with a strainer and a timer, so we know exactly when to pour the tea into our cup and it resulted in aromatic, flavorful tea. I also tried their fig and pecan pie 49K which instantly become love on the first bite. I bought home some almond and chocolate financier which also tasted above average.

Last weekend, We went back again with a friend for some tea and delicacies. As we’ve just eaten lunch, we only opted for their tea and, of course, a plate of parmigiano puff to munch on. We’re having a great time there and an hour later, when we think we can order again, we went for a plate of On-demand Parma Platter (parma ham and DOP parmigiano reggiano, unlimited torta fritta, and tray of mostarda selection) 85K. I’ve been meaning to order this as I saw their big shiny meat slicer machine that they put in front of the cafe. The parma ham was delicious, a bit salty, but by combining it together with the cheese, and some mostarda (candied cherry, fig, apple, pear, onion), it created a delicious and balanced dish.

So far, I haven’t found anything to criticize about Komunal 88. The food is great, the service is impeccable, plus the place have free valet service. So yeah, I’m already plotting my next visit.
