Baku Sayang is a relatively new restaurant in Pesanggrahan area not far from Layar Seafood restaurant (read the review HERE). As we passed by, it looked promising so we decided to give it a try.
The restaurant serves Manado and Ternate cuisines. Inside, it is quite spacious with nice design and ambience. The proprietors are clearly designing this place with office/family gatherings in mind. The very knowledgeable staff was very helpful as we are deciding on what to order.
After much back and forth, we ordered bakwan jagung (corn fritters) 25K, cumi hitam ternate (Ternate’s style squink ink dish) 55K, garoupa bakar rica (grilled garoupa with rica sauce) 180K, terong rica telor (eggplant and egg cooked with rica sauce) 25K and nasi kuning Manado 35K (for the children) 35K. They also offer nasi merah (red rice) for those who want a healthier option. For the beverages, we ordered es lemon cui (kalamansi juice) 20K.
Our orders arrived momentarily and all of them tasted good and more importantly, spicy! Usually a nicely designed restaurant is often a signal that the food is on the milder side, but that was not the case with Baku Sayang as the food got a really nice bold flavor. If you don’t fancy spicy food, the spicy chili sauce for some menu can be served separately. As for me, I really like the spiciness of the savory cumi hitam ternate. The corn fritters and eggplant also tasted above average. The grilled fish was especially good, grilled to perfection with thick and sucullent meat. It works well with the chili sauce provided.
We enjoyed our dinner there and couldn’t help ordering a glass of es kacang brenebon (sweet iced red bean dessert) to cool down the heat. All in all, it was a satifying dinner, although the price was on the higher side, it was worth our every cent.
