February 5, 2015 | JAKARTA, No Pork, Non Smoking Resto, Noodle, North Jakarta, Thai & Vietnam Cuisine

Finding a good bowl of pho in Jakarta is not easy. We know a place that serves authentic pho, but it is located at Kemang Village, which is quite far for us as we live in West Jakarta. Fortunately, I’ve heard about the recently opened Vietnamese noodle bar at PIK (Pantai Indah Kapuk) area called NamNam Noodle Bar. I was excited as I’ve been craving something soupy lately, so SC & I decided to go there yesterday.

Apparently, NamNam Noodle Bar hailed from Singapore. It has quite a reputation in Singapore, so I expected the branch here will excite Jakarta foodies as well. We went there for lunch and arrived quite early so it was still easy to park and get a table. NamNam is located on the same row as Ikuddo Ichi and SumoBoo, and it have a big signboard in front of it so it was easy to spot. The interior is eclectic, yet feels warm and cozy, and most of all, it is a non-smoking restaurant. Yay!

The menu and ordering form are available on each table, consisting of variations of banh mi, hanoi pho, other noodle, small plates and Vietnamese dessert. As I was craving for noodle soup, I decided to order a bowl of pho beef combination (beef steak slices – served medium rare, beef balls, beef shank, tendon, honeycomb tripe) 75K while SC set his mind on fried catfish with turmeric bahn mi 49K. For drinks, we ordered a pot of hot lotus tea 25K and freshly pressed sugarcane juice with kaffir lime leaves 20K.

The pho came in a large portion and the meat was generous. The broth was quite flavorful, though I thought the beef flavor is not strong enough (maybe due to the lack of MSG as they’ve stated in the menu). The beef was tender and flavorful though, so I enjoyed it nonetheless. SC’s catfish bahn mi also tasted good. The baguette was crunchy with tasty and generous filling. There are various types of sauces provided on the table to add to your preference, but I didn’t spot the bird eye chili sauce. So I guess we have to ask for it if we want a spicier broth.

All in all, it was a nice addition to the PIK food scene. Although the price is a bit pricey, I know I’ll be back for another helping of their noodle soup and bahn mi.
