Last month, we went to South Jakarta to have dinner with several friends at Sakura Japanese Restaurant. I’ve heard many praises about this place for quite some times now, but since it was too far away, I hadn’t had a chance to try it. The place is located at TB Simatupang. From the outside, it looks humble but quite promising. When we arrived at around 6:30PM, the place was already buzzing with patrons. Luckily, our friend who is a regular there has already made a reservation. We’re seated at a long table in front of the sushi bar, so we can watch the chef prepares the sushi.

Since we’re the first to arrive and my stomach was already screaming, we ordered a bowl of Yaki Buta Ramen (Japanese noodle with grilled pork loin and vegetables in miso soup and ground black pepper) 65K. It was delicious and very different from other miso based ramen that I’d ever tasted. The broth is tasty and not too salty. We ended up ordering 2 more bowls of Yaki Buta Ramen. After our friends arrrived, we began to order. The menu is quite extensive, consisting of Teishoku menu, Donburi, Bento, Makimono, Nigiri Sushi, Curry Rice, Ramen, Udon/Soba, Ala Carte, Ochazuke/Onigiri, Sashimi, Nabemono and Sono hoka. Several complimentary dishes were served, but I forgot to ask about their names.

Yakibuta Ramen

So, we ordered maguro sashimi teishoku (5 slices of fresh tuna) 75K, another bowl of ramen: buta no kakuni ramen (noodle with sweet sliced porkloin and sweet corn in shoyu soup) 67K, chutoro sashimi (tuna’s belly) 100K, zaru soba (cold buckwheat noodle served with wasabi) 50K. I also ordered kinpira gobo (loved it!) 10K, maguro tataki salad (sliced boiled tuna cucumber and seaweed served with vinegar dressing) 49K, Salmon Sashimi 60K, Maguro Akami Sashimi (the leaner side of Tuna) 60K, Shima Aji Sashimi (stripped jack from yellow tail family ) 63K and Shake Kabuto Yaki (grilled salmon head) 72K. In my opinion all the dishes were excellent and authentic with top-notch presentation. I’m not really picky when it comes to sashimi. I’ll be happy as long as the sashimi is fresh. That’s why I love sushi/sashimi that is prepared the minute you order it, not the one that was already going around for who knows how long in a conveyor belt. 🙂

Sakura 桜 Restaurant

We finished our dinner that night with a cup of matcha ice cream 14K and Oshiroku which is a warm and sweet dessert made from red bean and Japanese rice cake/mochi 31K. I liked the Oshiroku so much. It was a wonderful night, we’re looking forward to go back there again 🙂

    Paling ga sebulan sekali gw ke tempat ini. Dan selalu mesen Yakibuta Ramen. Sushi Chef yg ada di foto diatas itu pak Kus. Wkt pertama liat gw kira juga orang Jepang. Ternyata, pas denger dia ngobrol.. Bukan.
    Baik, selalu ngasih complimentary dishes tiap gw kesana. Nyam.

    Bulan lalu sempat kemari dan rasanya enak bangets.
    Tapi sebentar lagi tempat yang di TB Simatupang ini mau tutup dan mereka akan pindah ke Cikarang.
