I tried two restaurants specializing in hotpot dishes last week. One was Shaburi at Pacific Place, the other was Sichuan Palace at Mediterania Apartment Complex on Jalan Gajah Mada. Originally, I planned to go to Little Sheep Shabu Shabu on the same apartment complex (there are quite a lot of restaurants there), but upon entering the restaurant, I found out that smoking is allowed in the entire premises. I decided to walk out and entered Sichuan Palace. Fortunately, Sichuan Palace has a separate non-smoking dining area, so we decided to have lunch there instead.
They offer both all-you-can-eat hot pot for 168K and a la carte menu. We decided to have a la carte menu considering that we’re not that young anymore. so we ordered fish, meat (lamb and beef), several types of vegetables, mushroom, and tofu. They offered several types of soup bases: chicken soup, herbal chicken soup, tom yum soup and since it’s a Sichuan restaurant, they also serve mala tang. So we decided to have two soup bases: chicken soup and mala tang.
mala hotpot is Chongqing style hotpot which uses Sichuan pepper, chili oil, dried chili in the soup base, creating a very spicy soup. The chicken soup have a slightly cloudy / white-ish color which I suspect came from boiling chicken bones for hours. It was delicious of course. I also love the mala soup as it was very hot and slightly numbed my mouth after I ate it. However, I think it is better consumed during cold/rainy day. The beef, lamb and fish were also fresh, as were the vegetables. Overall it was one fulfilling lunch, though a bit on the pricey side, but I think it’s worth trying.
