September 25, 2014 | JAKARTA, Malaysia Singapore, North Jakarta, With Pork

A few months ago, I heard that a popular bak kut teh chain from Singapore called Song Fa Bak Kut Teh has opened its first store in Jakarta. I was a bit reluctant to visit at the time as I also heard that the place was very crowded and there was a long queue even before they open. But one day, several food blogger friends asked me whether I wanted to join them for a visit, so I said yes.

Song Fa Bak Kut Teh is located at the OZONE building, right across PIK Hospital. The parking area is very limited, without any indoor/basement parking available. I arrived around 11:30, put my name on the list and waited about 30 minutes to get a table. The place was indeed very crowded. There’s a terrace sitting area, but nobody would want to sit there during the day. I was excited since I saw a kettle for tea making on each table. We ordered pork ribs soup with stomach and tenderloin 98K, mee sua 15K, braised chicken feet with beancurd skin (S) 30K, ground nuts (S) 15K, dough fritters (m) 12K. We also ordered Chinese tea (aged pu erh) 35K to share.

The Chinese tea came with a kungfu tea set that enabled us to brew our own tea. I always love the earthy tone in pu erh, plus I like to play with the tea equipment *grin*. The bak kut teh served at Song Fa Bak Kut Teh is actually a Singapore/Teochew style pork rib soup where the broth is clearer, laden with white pepper and garlic. Not quite what I liked since I’m more into the Malaysian/Hokkien style bak kut teh that have a more complex broth with lots of Chinese herbs and spices. Other than that small complaint, Song Fa’s bak kut teh was quite good. The meat was tender and the soup refillable.

About 2 weeks later, I went there for the second time. I wanted to try their sliced fish soup, but it turned out to have been sold out. So we ordered pig tail soup 60K and braised pig intestine 30K. Their Chinese tea option was also not available, so we’re served with iced tea in plastic glasses. Overall it was a good meal, but for me, I still prefer the bak kut teh served at Ta Jia restaurant (read the review HERE) at Muara Karang / Hayam Wuruk area.
