The first time I went to Trafique Coffee was to attend the launch of Ratna Somantri’s new book: The Story of Tea. At that time, Trafique Coffee was still in the soft opening phase. After the event, I got the chance to try their coffee and they told me that the beans come from the Barista championship that was still ongoing at the time. It tasted good, but there was no price list yet, only the words pay as you taste printed on the temporary menu.

Several months later, I went here again with SC and a friend. Trafique Coffee is located on Jalan Hang Tuah Raya No. 9. There’s no prominent sign at the premises, just find the big yellow arrow and number 9 at the left side of the street as soon as you entered Jalan Hang Tuah Raya from Jalan Asia Afrika. They occupied a big white brick building with a nice yellow door. Nowadays the place is always full with coffee lovers and people who just want to hang out there as the place is spacious, nicely decorated and have several instagram-able spot.

The coffee selection is divided into old wave (espresso, cappuccino, latte, macchiato, etc.), cold wave (ice coffee, chocolate, smoothies, etc.), new wave (affogato, flavored latte, spresso, breeze, etc.) and manual brew (kalita, aeropress, cold drip) with a number of single origin selections. I ordered a cup of Gilbraltar to try and I also spotted some nice looking desserts. I couldn’t resist ordering their black Russian pie and brownies with a scoop of vanila ice cream. To be honest though, the desserts tasted just average. The black Russian tasted weird, so I’m not sure what kind of liquor/flavor they used. The coffee was nice as expected. Later on, I ordered a cup of spicy chocolate, which tasted just like milo spiked with chili flakes. Next time, I’ll stick to the coffee menu.

Overall, it’s a nice place to hang out, although the place tends to get very crowded in the afternoon, especially on weekends. I’ll be back again to try their new wave coffee such as Spresso which is sprite with espresso.
