I’ve heard many rave reviews about a restaurant called Umabo, which stands for ‘Umami Bowl’. Headed by the duo chef Fernando Sindu and Ivan Wibowo, they offer gourmet fast food joint with an Asian flair, with a selection of Uma-Bo (rice bowls), Uma Burger, Uma-Munch (sandwiches), Uma-Sides, Uma-Sweets (desserts) and Uma-Chug (drinks). Umabo also offers pop-up brunch on weekends. We tried it a couple of months ago and were quite impressed.

Located on Wijaya I street (just right across Samudra Chinese restaurant), easily spotted with a big Uma-bo letter signboard. The place is not big, but cozy enough. The interior is simple, decorated in warm woody feel, exposed ceiling, and an open kitchen at the far end. After scanning the menu, we ordered J-town burger (150gr hamburg patty, short ribs, cheddar cheese, fried egg, shredded lettuce, breakfast potatoes) 65K, Salmon Bene (slow-poached eggs, smoked salmon, peas guacamole, toasted sourdough, dill hollandaise, petite salad) 60K, pink lemonade 15K and a cup of tea 15K.

The eatery was crowded on weekends, so we have to wait for quite some time before our meals showed up. But the wait was truly worth it. The J-Town burger was delicious, nice thick bun with tasty patty and runny egg. The salmon benedict was also superb. The portion was so big I almost couldn’t finish it. I also like the salad with Asian vinaigrette, it was tangy and refreshing.

We really enjoyed our brunch that day and decided to return again someday on weekdays to try their umami rice bowls.
